Expertise should travel.
Some of the most consequential knowledge in civic and social-purpose work is held by practitioners doing the work. It is not abstract expertise imported from outside. It is knowledge earned inside institutions, under real constraints, with public consequences: how to earn trust, welcome a wider public, protect a collection, sustain a fragile program, build resilient revenue, govern through change, or make access real.
Yet the people who hold this knowledge are often the least able to readily share it. The field benefits when they speak, teach, advise, convene, document, and exchange practice. Far too often, the originating institution bears the cost.
Practice Multiplied is Momentum's response. Through unrestricted grants to employing organizations, Momentum creates the institutional capacity for exceptional practice to move. The practitioner remains rooted. The knowledge travels.

The condition
The field has more knowledge than it can move.
Inside public-serving institutions, expertise is frequently concentrated in people whose time, attention, and institutional resources are already committed to immediate service.
Sharing what they know requires more than an invitation. It may require travel, preparation, staff coverage, documentation, translation, accessibility, technology, institutional permission, and sustained follow-through. The more essential a practitioner is to an organization, the more difficult it may be for that organization to release them.
The result is a structural imbalance: one institution bears the cost of developing the expertise; many institutions could benefit from it; almost no budget exists for its responsible transmission.
Practice Multiplied addresses that point of friction between knowledge and usefulness.
The premise
What has been learned once should be useful more than once.
Momentum regards practice-earned expertise as a form of knowledge capital. When that expertise can move responsibly — from one institution to a convening, peer exchange, working session, publication, or another organization confronting a similar question — its value can compound across organizations, disciplines, and communities.
The initiative does not assume that a successful method travels unchanged. Context matters. What travels is not a formula, but tested judgment: the principles, evidence, choices, adaptations, and failures that can help another institution see more clearly and act with greater intelligence.
The instrument
A specific thesis. An unrestricted grant.
Momentum makes its grant to the practitioner's employing organization, not to the individual. The organization is selected because Momentum believes that particular expertise has unusual potential value beyond the institution in which it was developed. Once made, however, the funding is unrestricted. The organization determines how best to use it.
There is no reimbursement model. No prescribed allocation among travel, preparation, staff coverage, documentation, technology, or ordinary institutional priorities. The relevant constraint may be airfare. It may be the cost of backfilling an essential role. It may be translation, accessible production, or something Momentum could not responsibly specify from outside.
Selection is thesis-led. Use is governed by the institution.
How it works
Expertise is found through the work itself.
Observe
Momentum identifies exceptional practitioners through its research, its institutional relationships, direct observation, and trusted nominations. Visibility is not qualification.
Understand
Momentum considers what the practitioner knows, how that knowledge was earned, the evidence that it matters, and whether its wider availability could strengthen the field.
Invest
Momentum provides unrestricted funding to the employing organization. The institution — not Momentum — determines what responsible participation and support require.
Release
The practitioner's expertise may travel through a plenary, conference, workshop, peer exchange, site visit, working group, publication, teaching engagement, advisory conversation, or another form suited to the knowledge and its intended audience.
Compound
One institution's hard-won learning becomes another institution's improved decision, avoided failure, stronger method, or newly visible possibility.
What Momentum looks for
Not necessarily the most visible practitioner. The one whose knowledge changes the room.

Developed through substantive responsibility and tested in real institutional conditions.
Consequential
Connected to meaningful decisions, capabilities, outcomes, or public value.

Useful beyond one institution without pretending that institutions or communities are interchangeable.

Accompanied by a willingness to help peers think, not simply to display accomplishment.

Recognized in partnership with the organization that made the work possible.

Capable of producing disproportionate field value when given a modest margin of freedom and reach.

What this is — and is not
Institutional capital, not individual elevation.
Practice Multiplied is not a prize, fellowship, speaker bureau, consultant roster, travel-reimbursement program, or conference-sponsorship fund. It does not extract exceptional people from the institutions in which their knowledge was developed. It does not turn practitioners into promotional assets. It does not ask an organization to absorb the cost of serving the wider field.
Momentum does not purchase a speech. It releases capacity.
The investment belongs to the institution. The expertise remains grounded in practice. The resulting value is allowed to travel.
Momentum's role
Capital at the point of transmission.
Philanthropy frequently pays to create new knowledge while underfunding the movement of knowledge that already works. Practice Multiplied begins elsewhere. Before commissioning another framework, it asks what the field already knows — and who has earned the authority to help others understand it.
Momentum's intervention is narrow but catalytic. It supplies the margin of freedom through which one institution's hard-won learning can become useful to many. The measure is not how many trips were purchased or stages filled. It is what the movement of expertise set in motion: a decision improved, a method adopted, a failure avoided, a collaboration begun, or a field standard raised.
Attribution and discretion
The contribution may be visible. The grant need not be.
Participation may be public where visibility serves the work and all parties agree. It need not be. Momentum seeks no naming rights and requires no acknowledgment. Institution-specific information, formative work, and the circumstances of an individual grant remain governed by consent.
The work is the signature.
How practitioners come into view
Bring exceptional practice forward.
Momentum works principally by invitation and observation, informed by its own research and a trusted nomination channel. A nomination may identify a practitioner and the institution in which the relevant work was developed. It is correspondence, not candidacy. It creates no competition, ranking, application process, or expectation.
A few candid sentences serve better than a formal case: what the practitioner knows, how that knowledge was earned, why it may matter beyond one institution, and what its wider availability could set in motion.
