Civic institutions rarely lack mass. Collections, campuses, credibility, history — weight accumulated over decades. What a struggling institution lacks is velocity: the forward motion of an organization that understands its audiences and grows in relevance rather than defending it.
Momentum works both directions of that equation. Where motion has stalled, we supply it. Where motion exists, we multiply it. The name is not a metaphor of encouragement. It is a description of the mechanism.
Why we exist

The organizations society most depends on must earn every visit, every membership, every hour of attention. Nothing about their engagement is compulsory; all of it is chosen. Yet the intelligence, strategy, and flexible capital required to earn voluntary engagement are built for — and priced to — commercial enterprise.

We call them chosen institutions. They cannot compel attendance and cannot capture an audience — and no appropriation guarantees a following. The tax-supported library must still be walked into, freely, or it is a building of unread books. They can only earn. And what they earn — attention, membership, trust — is the raw material of civic life.
